BUSINESS LANDSCAPE

The acronym soup, decoded.

Company registration, tax, supplier databases and financial statements are connected—but they are not the same thing. Here is the plain-language map.

CIPC

The legal company.

CIPC handles company registration and ongoing company-law filings such as annual returns and beneficial ownership declarations.

A CIPC annual return confirms company information and continued registration. It is not a SARS tax return.

SARS

The tax system.

SARS administers corporate income tax, VAT, PAYE and other tax types. Which obligations apply depends on the business and its registrations.

Company registration does not mean every tax filing, activation or payment obligation is complete.

CSD

The supplier profile.

The Central Supplier Database keeps a standardised supplier record used by organs of state when sourcing goods and services.

CSD registration makes the business visible as a supplier. It does not guarantee a tender, contract or purchase order.

the dtic

The opportunity network.

The department and its agencies cover trade, incentives, regulation, competition, industrial development and sector support.

There is no single universal “DTI funding” application. Each programme has its own purpose and eligibility rules.

AFS

The financial evidence.

Annual financial statements organise the company’s financial position and performance: what it earned, spent, owns and owes.

AFS are not automatically audited. Audit or independent-review requirements depend on the company’s circumstances.

LOCAL

The activity and location layer.

Municipal licences, zoning and approvals depend on the activity, premises, by-laws and sector. Not every business needs one generic trading licence.

Check what applies to the actual work and location before paying for irrelevant registrations.
